For standard YouTube channels, new square or vertical uploads up to three minutes long are classified as Shorts. A wider video, such as 16:9, is not classified as a Short under that rule. You do not need to use the Shorts camera or add #Shorts to trigger classification. Date-specific rules apply to older uploads and Official Artist Channels. Choose a useful crop

A 9:16 edit is a practical choice for a phone screen. When repurposing a stream, keep the important action and face camera readable rather than shrinking the entire desktop into a portrait frame. Preview the result at phone size.

Square content can qualify, but it uses the frame differently. Choose the crop that makes the moment clear rather than treating aspect ratio as a promise of better reach.

Keep only the context the moment needs

Start close to the interesting action. If viewers need an explanation, give them that context before the payoff. A short clip is not automatically better: remove empty build-up, but keep enough information for someone who has never watched your stream.

Experiment with different lengths and compare your own retention and engagement. There is no universal winning duration or guaranteed discovery boost.

Frame rate and captions

Keep the source frame rate where practical and inspect the exported file for motion or audio problems. Do not convert a smooth recording to another frame rate without a reason.

Add accurate captions when speech carries the moment. Check names and game terms manually, keep text readable and preview it in the player so interface controls do not cover essential words. Captions also help viewers who cannot hear the audio.

Check music rights

A track available in the Shorts Audio Library can have its own permitted duration; some allow 90 seconds and others less. Do not assume any song is cleared for the full length of your edit. YouTube's royalty-free Audio Library is a separate option. YouTube's music and Content ID rules (opens in a new tab)

A Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim is blocked under the current rules. Twitch muting a VOD does not grant permission to reuse its soundtrack elsewhere. Check the audio rights for the actual upload, or replace the track with audio you are authorised to use.

Give the clip a clear title

Describe the moment in ordinary words. A title naming the challenge or useful takeaway helps a viewer understand what they are about to watch. Avoid promising something that never happens in the video.

Publish a few deliberate experiments, then use your channel analytics to decide what deserves another attempt. Treat any advice about hooks, length or posting frequency as something to test with your audience, not an algorithm guarantee.
